Team Fishel Races for the Cure!

Posted on May 11, 2012 by elliott

Team Fishel is limbering up for the 20th Annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure!  Scheduled in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday, May 19, 2012, the event gives us a great opportunity to stay involved with our community and make a strong stand in the fight against breast cancer.

Most of us have been touched by this disease somewhere along the way. Some have confronted it courageously within themselves. For others, it is an up close and personal experience as we fight alongside a spouse, family member or close friend. For many more, the knowledge comes through shared stories of victory or loss, powerful stories that stay with us forever although lived by folks we may not even know.

In honor of all those who have fought this disease, Team Fishel will participate in the 20th Annual Komen Race for the Cure. More than 50 Teammates, spouses, families and friends have signed on for the Columbus race on May 19. We hope many more follow their lead! Registration is open right up to race day and every sign-up helps raise the money needed to fuel the boldest science necessary to stamp out breast cancer forever. And remember, it’s not just a Columbus, OH event. The Race for the Cure happens in cities throughout United States. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved!

Get all the details today at www.komencolumbus.org or look for a race in your town at Komen Race for the Cure . It’s great for your wellness, great for your community and an important event in the battle against breast cancer. Join us!

One important note – early detection is one of the best weapons we have against breast cancer. Can’t be said often enough. So even though we’ve heard it many times before, here is one more reminder for women to take advantage of this readily available test each and every year. It can make all the difference!

In step with IEEE for the 2012 Transmission & Distribution Conference

Posted on May 3, 2012 by Team Fishel

The “Making Innovation Work for Tomorrow” theme sets the stage for the 2012 IEEE PES Transmission & Distribution Conference and Exhibition. Scheduled for May 7-12 in Orlando, FL, this year’s event offers the most comprehensive program in the T & D industry and Team Fishel is excited about participating.

The Transmission & Distribution conference is always a big draw, attracting power and energy professionals from all over the world. The event delivers the most up-to-date technical information and provides ample opportunity for attendees to exchange ideas on technological trends and best practices. The power industry evolves continuously and conference speakers will be addressing many of today’s hottest topics – things like the Smart Grid, cyber security and renewable energy sources as well as improvements in transmission and distribution reliability.

The Orange County Convention Center at Night

With innovation the buzzword throughout the electric utility industry, participating in the T&D Exposition is an excellent fit for Team Fishel. We’ve always done great work in electric power distribution, helping electric utility companies drive cost out of their business for more than 75 years. And today we are heavily involved in the power transmission side of the industry through our subsidiary Team Power Group, LLC.  Specializing in the construction and installation of electric power transmission lines throughout the central United States, TPG adds an important dimension to Team Fishel’s service portfolio.

The 2012 Conference & Expo will be a content-rich and informative experience for all. Be sure to find us at booth 4166 in the Orange County Convention Center. We look forward to seeing you!

One more thing! The conference kicks off with an Opening Reception on Monday, May 7. Guests and Exhibitors “are invited to attend the family reunions of two of Florida’s most prominent and notorious, families as you travel back to yesteryear to – Fabulous Florida in the Fifties!” You’ll join the Santiago Family and the Sawgrass Clan for some serious fun.  Sounds way too good to miss! See you at the reunions!

Building Team Fishel’s Future!

Posted on April 27, 2012 by Team Fishel

Leadership. We know it when we see it, yet it often remains difficult to describe. Although we have hundreds of definitions, most don’t quite capture the essence.  So when we really want to characterize leadership, we inevitably point to a person.  Here at Team Fishel, we often point to the late Jeff Keeler, our former Chairman and the kind of leader you might meet once in a lifetime.

When we think of Jeff, words like visionary, charismatic, dynamic and motivating come to mind.  He demonstrated each of those qualities and all were tied to an unwavering belief in people – in their ability to achieve, succeed and win. That’s why we are all Teammates today. That’s why Team Fishel is a high performance organization.  And those are the ideals reflected in the Jeff Keeler Leadership Academy (JKLA for short).

The Jeff Keeler Leadership Academy is an intense 15-month program designed to accelerate the personal, team, strategic and tactical leadership skills of Team Fishel’s future leaders.  The unique program integrates classroom training, collaborative coaching and experiential learning assignments, all focused on the primary mission – to develop Operationally Integrated Leaders at all levels of the organization.  These are the folks who will help our Teammates perform at their best every day and lead Team Fishel into the future.

We are pleased to announce the graduation of the JKLA Class of 2012! The class of 11 Teammates culminated the program with final presentations to Team Fishel’s Leadership Team at the April, 2012 Officer’s and Area Managers’ Meetings in Columbus, Ohio. We congratulate our newest JKLA graduates, extend best career wishes and look forward to experiencing their leadership for many years to come.

Leadership – you know it when you see it. We’re seeing it in these Teammates – big time!

Safety Leadership Program

Posted on April 24, 2012 by Team Fishel
article by by Fernando Rocha

What does it take to close the communication gap and move from a typical safety-driven organization to a High Performance safety-driven organization? It takes LEADERSHIP! We need GREAT leaders at all levels. Leadership is the ability to influence others to achieve a common goal.

At Team Fishel, we believe a great leader is an Operationally Integrated Leader (OIL). Operationally Integrated Leaders first lead themselves, and then their teams in the company’s strategies and tactics. The goal of the Safety Leadership program is to develop an ACCIDENT FREE culture through Operationally Integrated Leadership.

To date, Team Fishel has completed two pilot sessions in Columbus, Ohio and Santa Ana, California.  The typical class consists of 12 management and field supervisory Teammates.  Safety Leadership is a full 8-hour class, complete with pre-session assignments. The training is delivered using the four quadrants of Team Fishel’s Operationally Integrated Leadership model:

Module 1 consists of an introduction to Operationally Integrated Leadership (OIL). This session explores strategic leadership, emphasizing Team Fishel’s value to be ACCIDENT FREE.  This module focuses on eliminating both the human toll and financial costs that result from accidents.

Module 2 explores the tactical leadership of our ACCIDENT FREE value, which focuses on the execution of Team Fishel’s tactical Safety Action Plans.

Module 3 explores team leadership, which includes developing the essential team leadership skill of effective communication by practicing the art of giving balanced feedback.

Module 4 explores personal leadership, which includes a self-reflection using the OIL Check 360 assessment and creating a personal leadership development plan.

Team Fishel’s plan for this important Teammate Development and Accident Free initiative is to deliver this program to every Teammate in a leadership capacity by the end of 2012.  This is just the launching pad for developing an Accident Free Culture through Operationally Integrated Leadership – at all levels!

Team Fishel’s Craig Mathes honored as HR Superstar by Columbus CEO Magazine

Posted on March 28, 2012 by Team Fishel

Team Fishel Director of Human Resources and Safety, Craig Mathes, is now officially one of Columbus CEO magazine’s business “Superstars”. Each year the magazine honors a group of Central Ohio business men and women who “go above and beyond to make themselves and their organizations stand out in the crowd.” Published in the April 2012 issue, the seventh annual “Superstars” feature profiles 10 individuals from diverse career fields. Craig is honored as a Superstar in the Human Resources category and it is definitely recognition well deserved.

We’ve enjoyed significant achievements during Craig’s tenure at Team Fishel. He has helped us take great strides toward our goal of being Accident Free achieving decreases in both injury rate and auto accidents. As Craig noted in the Columbus CEO feature, “I think a lot of construction companies struggle with the concept of being accident-free. I truly believe that we’re in the pursuit of perfection in maintaining a risk-free environment for our Teammates.”

On the Human Resources front, Craig has worked tirelessly to help key initiatives succeed. He has championed the Jeff Keeler Leadership Academy (JKLA), an intense 12-month program designed to accelerate the personal, team, strategic and tactical skills of Team Fishel’s future leaders. Our second JKLA class is scheduled to graduate in April 2012.

Craig also spearheads HealthCheck 360, our wellness program that provides annual health screenings and risk assessments for enrolled Teammates. Last year more than 700 Teammates and spouses participated in the HealtCheck screening clinics and our health and wellness scores have improved overall from year to year.

Join us in congratulating Craig for attaining Columbus CEO’s HR Superstar status. He is truly an extraordinary Teammate helping us build a high performance Team.

One more tidbit…Craig worked as a roadie for rock ‘n roll band the Toll in the late 1980’s. Worldwide tour no less. Very cool!

Learn more about Craig in the April issue of Columbus CEO magazine.

Take control of health and wellness with HealthCheck360

Posted on March 16, 2012 by Team Fishel

HealthCheck360 is ready to roll at Team Fishel once again. This year’s Health Risk Assessment clinics and on-site biometric screenings are tentatively scheduled for June. It’s the perfect opportunity for each of us to take action and plan for a future of wellness and good health.

Wellness is an ongoing effort well-deserving of our attention. When you think about it, we often tend to compartmentalize many aspects of life.  It’s human nature. We strive to do our best at work every day.  Hobbies are kept “in a box” for the weekends and maybe a couple of evenings during the week. We do community service whenever someone needs us.  And we pay attention to fitness and nutrition “whenever we can.” But the truth is that good health and wellness ties everything else together – and HealthCheck360 programs help us get there.

When we are healthy, happy and well-rounded people, we work smarter, better and safer. We stay at the top of our game. And that assures a higher level of safety and more productivity at every job site.  It’s a winning combination that fits perfectly with our Fishelosophy and our way of life at Team Fishel.

Last year more than 700 Teammates and spouses participated in the HealthCheck360 screening clinics with an average score of 71. Let’s shoot for an even bigger turnout – and better scores – in 2012! You can learn more about our health and wellness programs in the March 2012 Team Fishel Spirit newsletter or by visiting www.healthcheck360.com.

Ohio’s Opportunity to become Broadband Leader

Posted on March 8, 2012 by Team Fishel

Industry buzzwords such as “information highway” and “broadband access” have been hot conversation topics for years. And with the world struggling to keep up with an ever increasing load of digital information, the topic remains hotter than ever. In fact, in his recent State of the State address, Ohio Governor John Kasich outlined a bold plan that could elevate Ohio to the rank of global broadband leader.

The governor’s plan calls for a $10 million investment that will dramatically expand Ohio’s broadband infrastructure. Network speeds will increase from 10 gigabytes to a screaming fast 100 gigabytes per second allowing for instantaneous transmission of complex data and image files. The expansion will utilize more than 1,800 miles of fiber that is already in place and operated by the Ohio Academic Resources Network (OARnet). If all goes as planned, the upgrade will connect Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Dayton and Toledo to the network by June 2012. The Akron, Youngstown and Athens markets will connect by October 2012.

Broadband Connectivity Creates Jobs

These statistics translate into real world examples that are astounding. In an editorial on 2/24/12, the Columbus Dispatch noted that the incredible network speed would allow every one of Ohio’s 1.8 million K-12 students to download an e-book simultaneously in two minutes! Similarly, the network could transmit the data equivalent of 80 million file cabinets filled with text – daily!

The Dispatch editorial characterized the broadband plan as “the 21st century equivalent of building an interstate to replace a two-lane road.” This is indeed a huge initiative and so are the potential benefits. There’s no question that a broadband upgrade of this magnitude will drive economic growth in Ohio. The supercharged network speed and capacity will likely attract investment from high tech companies. Hospitals, medical research organizations and universities will be able to share huge amounts of data instantaneously. And companies in all industry sectors will be able to collaborate and transact business much faster and efficiently. The results will manifest in job growth, an influx of new talent, more research dollars and innovation in all quarters. In short, the start of a new chapter and a razor sharp competitive edge for Ohio.

Will Ohio’s broadband upgrade happen as planned? Can’t say for sure. But here at Team Fishel we believe that any discussion of expanding Ohio’s broadband network merits hearty applause. It is very much in tune with the philosophy that we bring to work every day – always look for ways to do it better, always make sure we’re doing it right!

Team Fishel Connects with Metro Connect 2012

Posted on February 24, 2012 by Team Fishel

Metro Connect

John Phillips
John Phillips

Team Fishel President & CEO John Phillips will participate in a strategic breakout session at next week’s Metro Connect USA 2012 conference. John’s panel will discuss “Practical Challenges Facing Network Build-Outs”, a hot topic covering status of the LTE roll-out, the financial risks of laying fiber, Greenfield fiber hotspots, and creating a streamlined permitting environment across the country.

Held February 28-29 at the Eden Roc Renaissance in Miami Beach, this year’s event offers a content-rich agenda focused on the changing telecommunications landscape and its effect on metropolitan areas, access providers, and enabling vendors like Team Fishel.  Attendees will experience a variety of sessions addressing the expansion of network coverage, the major bandwidth drivers of the future, the relationship between data centers and metro carriers and the status of the wireless market.

This is important stuff. As network coverage expands to satisfy the exponential growth in broadband demand, we’ll see more fiber in ground, more lit buildings, more data centers and ever-increasing bandwidth. Businesses large and small will continue to experience richer content and faster information exchange than ever before, often via smart mobile devices that fit comfortably in the palm of the hand.

With our expertise in network installation and data center build outs, Team Fishel is very much in the game. We have much to contribute to the industry and CEO Teammate John Phillips will share some of our knowledge next week at Metro Connect USA. This year’s conference is a timely event that will surely stimulate vigorous industry discussion. Stay tuned!
